Few questions to help with my research...
I have these little guys in the past pics come up in the pastures and my growing areas of the yard. Based on my research, central Texas has a lot of cedar elm trees, so I'm assuming that is what these are; but hoping someone can verify this for me. I've seen a few small trees with good shape, taper, structure along the fence line that will be cut or shredded in the spring, so I plan to dig some in the next couple of months once dormancy fully sets in & before spring buds break; so hopefully I can get a positive ID so I can research the species before digging & transplanting to the grow out yard (it's been a decade since my last forestry class, so my ID skills suck). Has anyone collected these with success? Trunk diameters range from pencil to 4+ inches, with heights from 1-4 feet. I understand they are supposed to be easy to transplant and propagate from hardwood and root cuttings, so what size would you recommend I focus on when digging, or should I just take trunk cuttings on established saplings? I know they're impossible to kill when they come up in the wrong places, but it's funny how those "weeds" die in a heartbeat when I actually want them to grow lol
Thanks in advance!
