Does anyone know where I can source Japanese Maples in Canada w/ Purchase online?

I see the USA has lot's of vendors like MR.Maple; Eastern Leaf; etc. I'm located in British Columbia and not sure how to import. If anyone will point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it. The only option I've found is Canada Bonsai. Any other local suggestions?

Much appreciate your help.

Hello there. Another online option is Bonsia Store. If you google that you’ll find an online retailer who’s selling a variety of trees, including Japanese maples. I’ve bought from both vendors, and would recommend Canada Bonsai over the other.

Another option is to get out to the local nurseries. Hunters has locations in Vancouver and Surrey. There’s Art Knapp in south Surrey. And out in the Port Kelly area you have Arts Nursery and Port Kells Nursery quite close to each other. You can find decent material at all of them. The first picture is one I found at Arts, and the second at Port Kelly.

How about our very own Frank Corrigan, all around good guy and owner of https://riversedgebonsai.ca/
He's over on the Island at Nannoose Bay.

Sorry, didn't see you required online, still worth contacting him even though he doesn't list items for purchase on his website.

There’s always Canada bonsai. I follow them on Instagram and they have been getting some fantastic stuff in from Japan.

Thanks @Drewski for the feedback. Will check out Hunters, I've been to Art's and likely will go soon - thinking of buying a big tree and doing a trunk chop to get a solid nebari. Another good one I found is Cedar Rim, lots of maples!

Trees look great! Will post a few of mine in a new thread soon.

Will take a look at Frank's collection - I believe I spoke with him and he's on the island and will not ship (good reason to make a trip that way!) Appreciate it, Mike.

Good call - they sold out too early today on the maples for me on the west coast at least! Cheers, Mateo.

If you're looking for maples for bonsai, you might want to check out this list of Canadian Societies, Group, Nurseries and Shops that I try to keep fairly up to date:

If you're looking for maples for your garden/landscape (like Mr. Maple offers), Vineland in Beamsville, Ontario is an excellent source (they stock several hundred cultivars/sizes). Their 2022 catalogue is going to be mailed out soon (I suggest getting on that list). They don't have an online store, but they have kindly mailed small males to me inn the past.

If you can't find what you're looking for, sometimes reaching out to your local society (where you are a member 🙂) will send you in the right direction

Importation of Acer from Oregon might be a good option for you, too. The process is fairly simple once you figure it out, but does require some paperwork. I suggest starting here:

I also offer an importation service for people looking for material from Japan or the USA, but this is best for very rare, unusual, or advanced material, or for large volumes of material (e.g. 100 Deshojo) for workshops.

Actually, it is true! I do not sell my trees online. Very old fashioned in my approach. I prefer to meet those who acquire my trees and have some assurance that they understand the species and they will receive due care and attention. I fully understand that this is out of step with a large segment of the world today. But it is a fit for my situation where I have spent many years developing a limited number of trees. I am happy to serve those who prefer a more personal approach and would like to see and compare the product first hand. Fortunately, many bonsai enthusiasts agree with my approach.

@Canada Bonsai - Just ordered a Deshojo from you and a small oak sapling. Subscribed to Vineland's Catalouge too.

I suspect I will order a tree or two from Japan this year so I will be in contact in the near future - do you have any site recommendations in Japan I can look at? May need your help sooner than later 😅

Welcome to Crazy!

HAHHA so true. Glad to be apart of it!

Frank, appreciate you reaching out - A trip to the island is in the books soon, expect a call in the next month or two. Would love to check out your inventory.

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't have any websites to recommend.

All of my material comes from dedicated bonsai nurseries, markets, and especially in-person auctions in which participation (via live in-person proxy) sometimes requires large annual membership fees etc. in addition to all other fees. It took countless hours over 5-6 years (and lots of investment!) to develop these precious relationships and build trust. As of today I have 4-5 buyers that I can count on, and 2 extremely reliable exporters.

I am planning to visit you as soon as I get my car, which is on order. Also, see you today at Yamadori workshop in Victoria.
