Can someone please tell me what kind of tree this is? I have had it since 2015 and have never trimmed it, i just water it (its an inside plant). I would like to know if I can cut the branches with no leaves on it and trim/shape some of the tree but first I need to know what type it is.

Thanks in advance

It's a ginseng ficus with way too big leaves.

When did you prune it last time? (in your text you said '2015').
Otherwise yes, on this kind of tree you could cut basically whatever you want and it will bud back.

Btw: if some branches without leaves are dead of course they won't bud back, you can know if the branches without leaves are dead or alive just by trying to snap them with your fingers, if they break they were dead, if they bend they are alive.

Sorry I typed 2015 but in fact I have had the tree since 2005. I have never trimmed it, this is my first bonsai

Its a ficus microcarpa, they budd back extremely well with now worries, as for the dead or alive thing, I prefer the scratch test only because a branch can be alive and snap easily believe me I had a watering insedent last week (oops) but luckily if you break a live branch just put it back in place and it should heal. People may comment on this saying ginseng ficus are horrible and all kinds of crap, just ignore them and enjoy your tree, I hope to see what you do with it. Also as a side note, this tree is obviously in potting soil, I would look into using a proper bonsai mix that way your tree can have the best chance at life

Hello Must not be a Volkswagon,

That pot is full of what is called "Michigan Peat" that black mucky soil.
Next Spring repot that plant into some decent soil. Feed it a few weeks
until it starts new growth then cut the hell out of it. I don't know how it
has survived that long in that heavy soil, most plants die in it after a very
short stay. Only used by unethical growers cause it is like a quarter the
price of good peat moss.
