Hi where are you collecting them from? Do you have any pictures of others you have?
I’m collecting these in South Lake Tahoe, that’s the first one I collected but I will be collecting more in the spring

to me It looks like a vine maple more than a mointain maple. how big are the leafs compared to an Acer?

Very interested to hear about your experience with these. They’re all over the sierras I think?
Awesome same I’ll keep us updated, and yeah you can only find them in shady areas that are next to any river creek or stream and once you get into those areas they can be found, there’s some by my house that are like 25 feet tall and almost only grow as clump style. Some of them have some amazing white bark and the twigging is red like arakawa IMG_4503.jpeg

That does seem to fit the description of California Mountain Maple Acer Glabrum var torreyi.

Here is the only clear image a quick search yielded. End of growing season.. A bit beat up.

Yes I have the Rocky Mountain variety of acer glabrum. I’ve had a couple nursery stock trees over the years and now have a pretty big one that @Hartinez and I collected in the Rockies.

They are tough trees, very cold hardy, nice leaves and beautiful red twigs and buds. Similar to Japanese maple in a lot of ways, but more tolerant of cold and sun. One of my favorite native species!

Awesome love to hear it, share a photo if you can. I’ve only ever seen the Rocky Mountain variety at our nurseries as well. I asked Dylan if it would be possible to graft jap maple onto some nice collected trunks and he didn’t think it was possible since they aren’t that closely related but do you think they would take thread grafts?
