Hoping someone here might be able to help. I'm looking for a dwarf red leaf JM, preferably one that is mounding or weeping. This is for my mom and she absolutely want one on its own root and the only ones I can find are all grafted.
Is there anyone out there that sells them on their own roots? It doesn't have to be a named variety, just one that would be good for a small space next to a koi pond.

Edit to add, I'm only looking for a 1-2 year old tree. Nothing too fancy or expensive.

Its not bad but she has had bad luck with the green root stock throwing backbuds and out growing the red top. The one she has now is a hot mess. Looks like I may have to hunt down a airlayer start, don't really want to do seeds.

In my experience, the red varieties need to be out in the sun. Else they weaken and your mom's problem ensues.

If she wants non-green foliage you would probably make her happier with an Acer palmatum var. atropurpureum 'Bloodgood'. One of the few I have ever grown that escapes any phase of green foliage. They can be hedged/shaped pretty darn nicely. The reason I mention that variety is that it should be easier to find a decent one non-grafted. Most of the others that don't have a green phase are not as common, almost always grafted

Well, I give up guys. I talked mom into trying a grafted tree but I probably looked at 200 maples yesterday at a number of nurseries and every single one had really high very noticeable grafts. Even the smaller trees had a good 2- feet of naked green root stock then the nice weepy red top. Beautiful tree but why would someone want such a tall stock on a mounding type tree?
I told her to airlayer the red JM she has now right above the graft, that way she would have a nice ground hugger like she wants and I could have the green stump:)
