Took some walk in the local neighbourhood recently and discovered in one of the gardens a maple with brilliant and bright red foliage, almost like Seigen or Benichidori.
As it seems fully leaved out and given the time of the beginning of July, I wonder, which cultivar may have such colours in summer?

Sorry as this is not strictly only Bonsai related, but I have never seen such bright colours and this time of the year.
Unfortunately I could not get any closer.

hi Yamamomiji

if i had to guess, this is a Yamamomiji :)

mine looks the same in a much smaller scale. It was green, then placed to full sun, then leaves got dark, then removed the dark leaves....new shot is amazing red.

you can see on the picture, the tree had a partial leavecut.
then new red buds and then the owner cut the remaining part of the previous leaves away. this will just grow now.

this also is the reason why you have not seen the tree red bevore....it was green bevore dynamic leavecut

Thanks for the reply @zita. 😉

I will revisit this tree in about 2 - 3 weeks most likely and will have another check.

It is about 7 m tall and I doubt that the owner did a leave cut or anything similar. I had the strong feeling that this tree had quite some dead branches and neglected parts ...

But who knows ...
As said, will have the opportunity to check soon.

Thank you!

how wrong i was, lol.

7meters...then i would expect it isnt a palmatum. Yes, please have a revisit and report how red it stays.

Arent there many many Japanese maples and some that become small trees like this one🤔?

yeah good point.
well then i still would say it isnt one of the 20 most known cultivars of JM

From the picture is certainly hard to imagine the scale.
I will have another visit and see, how the colours have changed or stayed. Really interested to find out what it is (if the owner knows) and report back.

Dead and dying branches and fall color indicates extreme stress. Not unusual for any tree that's close to dying to show autumn colors.

There are hundreds of Japanese maple cultivars in cultivation in the USA, there was a nursery near Springfield Illinois that had over 100 in stock when I visited some dozen years ago, sadly health issues put them out of business. But there are many other nurseries in USA, Canada and in the EU that specialize in Japanese maples, that would make guessing at a specific cultivar name very prone to error.

There are many more than 20 likely cultivars in active cultivation. Unless you ask the owner and the owner still has records, guessing at the cultivar name is not likely to be accurate.

Thanks for your other replies.
I am not into the specific cultivar per se, but interested, if someone probably is aware, if this is a popular one among the many, many hundreds.
The raspberry tone of the foliage in this time of year is either as suggested a sign of stress or potential other unwanted processes or this dwarf very own nature.
As I could not find anything so far and through this board other have not identified well-known cultivars, that might feature such colour and leaf size, I guess, it is pretty uncommon.

I had the chance to revisit the tree yesterday but sadly no one was there to ask for further information.
Having said that, I have to contribute, that at this specific time of day, the light especially shines at a preferable angle through the leaves, appearing brighter as it is in the shade.
Still, it has this dwarf habit and raspberry tone to it.
