Driving home today and saw a root ball out of the corner of my eye. This handsome boxwood had been dug up and tossed in a ditch and I couldn’t see it go to waste. Soooooo many people in the south (I’m in Birmingham, Alabama) had their boxwoods hit by temps in the 80s during the day and down below freezing that night and when they saw the brown they panicked and dug them up and replaced them. Lucky me!

Not the finest root system…let’s see what we find.

Part of me thinks this may have been a layer of some kind? Lots of fine feeders right above it.

Lots of good sized trunks to choose from. Roots growing out from thanks to being planted too deep I’m sure.

Anyway, trimmed off the dead stuff, removed stuff growing straight up and straight down, trimmed back the long stuff. Soaked it in root stimulator while I built a box and put some old soil (potting mix/perlite/pine bark), lava rock, and perlite, and a lil sphagnum around the roots. I’m pretty hopeful.

Would really appreciate any suggestions or comments on after care! I’m shooting for 80% shade and only afternoon sun, keeping things moist, and watching and waiting.
