Should I be concerned about this moss or mold or whatever it is on the trunk and limbs?

That would be lichen or algae. It shouldnt harm the tree but many brush off lichen, algae and moss from trunks and branches to allow for more likely backbud development and a better contrast between branching and leaves.

I think they look better with the clean bark look. I had a lot growing on mine earlier this yr and I used a soft bristled toothbrush with warm soapy water and cleaned off the trunk, exposed roots, branches and all. The little bit of soapy water won’t harm the tree one bit.

But the brush does affect the structure of the bark...
