I got this bougie a few months ago and did a major cut back. Now it is budding out like crazy.
Should I let all those grow out? Or start figuring out my design and cut off the ones that don't fit?
I attached pics. The very start, after the cut back and a pic taken today.

Thanks

Did you prune the roots too, out of curiosity?

I'm interested in what the experts also say on this one. My "monster bougie" that I dug out of the ground back in September now has new branches up to 18" long and I'm starting to cut them a little to try to get more internal branches on them. At some point, I have to decide what to also do with the big trunk branches but you can see how my is "sprouting". One thing I'm finding out about bougies here in the hot desert is that they seem to be the easiest plant to re-grow. Just stick a bare trunk into a pot of wet sand, fasten a bag over the top, and in a couple of weeks new shoots start growing out all over it.

No, I did not. I got it in the fall when it was cooling down. I know they like repotting in the heat of summer, so I will do that then.
I'm still actively learning what's possible. It's a relatively new hobby for me.

Your answer is going to be different than almost anyone as you only have about 3 more weeks of "winter". I'll answer with another question. What do you want these to become? Are you thinking to put them in pots this year? Personally, I would let them go crazy for the next couple weeks then cut back to the first node. If you are going to a major root reduction, let them build up strength till summer. It all depends on what you want to do...

That's a beautiful piece! If some of the big chunks don't fit your design, root them at interesting angles.

Thanks - Was hoping someone over in Phoenix area would respond. Pastry Baker and I have been wondering about where I might end up going with this big thing. Right now it has about 7 different trunk sections each between 2" - 4" in diameter. I'm pretty sure that at least some of them will ultimately be coming off (and re-potted), but I don't really have a vision yet on this. I think I'm going to keep letting it grow out for at least 2 months and see where it goes. It seems to be doing fine right now. There are literally 100 shoots coming out all over through the bark - some very tiny. I've already reduced it's height some back in November, but it still is about 2 1/2' tall.

Yes, I have decided to let them grow out t and build strength. Then do the cut in the late spring. As you probably know it comes around late Feb here..lol
Then do the potting in the summer. Thank you.
