I use both, but prefer the putty. Personally, I think wound prep is the key.
You can use anything that keeps the tree from drying out; paint, vaseline, oil, mist, whatever.
Its not important what you use; knowing how your subject will respond to what you use is important.
That's bonsai right there. Do it, observe, learn, and then do what works best for you.
