Bonsai Terrarium Project

As a sci-fi nerd that is into bonsai, this really hits my niche. As @dbonsaiw mentioned, very reminiscence of Azuma Makoto's Paludariums. I think I'll finally take a stab at building something like this. What did you use for the case?
Hey, fellow SF writer, here!

The case I used was a cheap reptile terrarium. I knew I'd need to cut the back to fit the lights, so avoided glass.

Link to case: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F43QRNG9?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

Wish you luck with your build!

thinking about dormancy..

this is a fridge ;)

MONA art museum in Tasmania Australia has something similar on display. Just saw it advertised recently.

That idea is cool and I wish you luck with it! I’d imagine the Chinese elm being one of the best deciduous candidates.

I think a type of tint on the viewing window would help keep the brightness down. Maybe look sleek as well. Not sure how bright it is. I know I had to wear glasses when I had my indoor setup. Those lights can be bright and obtrusive to the eyes.
This was the best advice. The photo doesn’t do it justice. I was looking for other places around my house to place this thing due to the harsh light. But after tinting it with 35% and running a double strip across the top—it’s not only bearable, but pleasant. Thanks for the tip!IMG_9951.jpeg

I should have mentioned this the other day when the window tint was suggested, but they make MIRRORED window tint.

I'd bet that lining the inside of your greenhouse with "mirrors" (mirrored window tint) would increase the light the plant gets by several magnitudes, while also making it easier to look at, without adding much heat.

Oh well I guess. Maybe next time.

I thought about a reflective liner in my initial build, but I felt the black backdrop was better on the eyes—however, if this tree seems like it’s not getting enough light, it’s certainly not off the table.

For several years I've been wanting to build some kind of terrarium / aquarium hybrid. With some fish and some plants in a hydroculture kinda setting where the plants filter the aquarium. I know for a fact it works with plants but recently I've been wondering if it can be done with a Bonsai tree.
Aquariums and direct sunlight are not a great combination so it will be difficult to find a species that has the perfect match of low light requirements and can handle relatively wet roots. I already did some research into this and found some people that have been succesfully growing certain trees in a hydroculture setup. Another concern would be if the aquarium water can hold enough nutrients to feed a tree without killing the fish. I think with some trial and error you can make it work.
I'm definitely trying it one day. Just not right now.

I haven't heard of them. I'm definitely interested, though!
His famous work is about death and decay 😆 he kills reallly nice bonsai for effect. Not really an example to follow if you want a living bonsai. Most, if not all, of the bonsai he uses are killed (bare-rooted, set loose in orbit etc)

That's insane. To each their own, I suppose.

This took me longer than I care to admit to put together.

I know trees are supposed to be outside...but this is more of, "I know the rules, and I'm breaking them," sort of thing.

I'd like to see how long this elm can go without receiving any dormancy, on my desk, all year round. That's the plan anyway.

Anyone else have success with a bonsai on your desk?
Cool! This looks like something that I would imagine seeing on the 2001 Space Odyssey craft on a display surface enduring distant space travel to preserve tree specimens. Mighty Fine!
