I recently bought this bonsai from a friend who said they rarely take care and wanted to get rid of it and wanted to check if the roots look healthy. The tree seems fine, but I’m not sure if the color/texture is normal.

It was a pine. Pines are classed as evergreens with the emphasis on 'green'
Very likely the tree died because it was kept indoors. Pines are some of the lest likely to survive indoors. If you need an indoor bonsai, look for a Ficus.

Never mind, we live and we (hopefully) learn. Now it is time to go out and find a living specimen to start over. Assuming it was in a ceramic pot, you do now have a pot to put another tree into.

Hope you get you money back. 👍 fwiw. I’d be skeptical your “friend” didn’t know it was dead. I mean Jeez it’s brown and crispy. Are pines around you brown and crispy? Tree should be green pines are green all the time
