Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me? I’m new so apologies if this is in the wrong place. I was given a beautiful metasequoia bonsai yesterday but live in a flat with no outside space.
Is it possible to grow these indoors? If so can anyone give me some advice on how best to care for it indoors.
many thanks in advance.
Walt

Hi sorry to tell you this but unfortunately metasequoia is a deciduous tree that needs a cold period in winter. This tree will need to be exposed to the seasons to survive it may live indoors for a year or two but will slowly fail and die. To have success with this tree it needs to be kept outside all year round. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metasequoia_glyptostroboides

Many thanks for your response. It’s a shame but I will grow it at a friends garden.

I have several small ones that I've grown indoors most of the year. I move them outside in the fall to trigger dormancy then stor them over winter in my garage...outside would work too.

They do need a winter dormancy, but can grow indoors if given enough light.

Do you have pictures?

Also, if you edit your profile to contain your location...closest major metro is fine...and your grow zone if you know it...people can offer more localized advice.

If you really have no access to outside you can grow a few types of tropical plants like figs under a grow lights indoors. They require no winter chill there are a few who keep tropicals indoors jerry meislik comes to mind I have linked his site https://www.bonsaihunk.us/
