I read somewhere a long time ago that bonsai with a long first branch would be placed at the entrance of a home or bonsai garden as a symbol of welcome.

Although the one above is quite exaggerated, i like it very much. I'm trying to grow one that is similar.

I saw an in-ground black pine in Kyoto that had one branch running along a fence for about 25 feet.

I saw that tree in Kyoto too. There are a couple naiwaki around Japan like that.

According to this Bonsaiempire page it's from Ryokan Yachiyo wich is a hotel in Kyoto.
