Big green maple stumps from the Growing Grounds

2 springs ago, I decided to remove all the branches. Last year, I just let it grow all season without trimming. Then trimmed it down in the fall. This was early spring this year after it was repotted into a large colander with 80% sieved diatomite and 20% composted pine and pine fines. Before this, it was sitting in a flat rectangular bin from the Containter Store in diatomite mixed with organic compost. It did really well. Roots filled the whole thing.

#2 actually arrived with leaves and got a freeze burn because it was still cold here. New shoots have just sprouted.. phew. I cut the top off because it didn't look right in person.

I moved both of them into larger flat pots without disturbing the roots too much. I'll do real repotting next spring.

#3 is MASSIVE. It must be almost 3 feet tall.

The leaves of all 3 maples. I'm guessing he grew them from seeds many many years ago. It's so neat that they vary quite a bit in appearance and spring color. I know #1 turns bright red in the fall. I wonder what the other two's fall colors will be.

Some nice material you got there! I like #3! I have gotten stuff from Marc as well. The one thing about his stock is that I have found in almost all cases for the nebari to be unrefined and coarse.

Yeah, what do you do on yours? Do you do ground airlayering or wrapping wires around the base? I do the latter to my smaller maples with great success. I have not attempted that on #1 where roots are on one side. LOL Who knows what #2 and #3 look like in there. It sounds like they are probably similar.

I usually resort to doing root grafts in the ones I've had. However, in working on a semi cascade Japanese maple, I instead cut all around a couple of thick roots. Basically they were air layered to try and force finer roots closer to the trunk. We shall see its success since I was not able to go around the entire perimeter of both roots.

Do you use its own cuttings for grafting or seedlings? I would be interested in finding out whether your partial airlayering takes.

He doesn't post pictures on the website anymore. You can email him what you're looking for. He'll email a bunch of pictures.

Just seedlings. Roots in the end look the same on most all Japanese maples regardless of cultivar. Arakawa of course being an exception.

That's definitely not what I was expecting when I read "stump"! Hmm maybe I need to plan a visit to this place...
LOL that's what he calls them. You're in the same state as him. That should be easy. Nothing beats picking trees in person.
