I think this thread is kinda demonstrating one of the flaws of a forum where if you ask "when do I pinch spruce" free of any other context and get an answer of "when the buds look like such-and-such / ${insert specific week/month here}", then you've been done a great disservice instead of been helped out if the people who've answered your question didn't ask for more photos, more information, etc.
The spruce in this post looks like it's in the very very early stages, where pinching is still a long, long way off.
I gotta ask:
- The tree looks like it hasn't even had primary branch wiring. Is this correct? If so -- answers of "pinch when the buds look like this" are really leading you astray
- There's no photo or information that tells us whether this DAS has made the full transition out of nursery/field soil and into bonsai soil, but given that it doesn't look wired either, I fear it's also still in its nursery soil or only part of the way into that transition. Is this correct? If so, again, answers that answer your post without calling into question the entire context of this work are doing you the complete opposite of a solid.
Are you absolutely certain you want to pinch and that this tree is ready for it? It doesn't look remotely close to that to my eyes. Many a DAS get thrown into years-long "development quicksand" because growers mistake a deep-into-development step or later refinement step for a first-order-of-business step. Not trying to throw a wet towel on your excitement but, like, I've got a DAS that I'm only starting to think about pinching several years after transitioning it to aggregate soil and after initial wiring. Only now am I getting growth that might pop out of the silhouette on my pads. I can't see any pads in your picture, or any evidence of styling at all.
