I wasn't sure whether to put this here or under conifers, I apologize if this is the wrong spot.
I have a young white cedar/arborvitae that came up in the area between the house and a brick garden path. It's somewhere around 5-10 years old and about 6 feet tall (growing slowly since it's in a heavily shaded location).
I am interested in collecting it to use for bonsai eventually.
I need to move it soon, if it gets much bigger, I could damage the brick path removing it. It also needs to be chopped of course.
I am mostly wondering about the best time of year to do this. Could the pruning/chopping be done now, or should I wait until it's dormant in early winter? Is it best to also dig it up then, or can that wait until spring?
Also, when I do dig it up, would it be better to plant it in the ground in a sunny location or a shady one, or would it be best to just place it in a large pot so I can move it around. I know they like sun , but this one's been in full shade its whole life and I'm afraid suddenly moving it to a sunny location, combined with root damage would kill it.
But ideally I would like to give it a few more years in the ground in a better location.
