This is the bald cypress I shot two years ago. I have a bad habit of burying yamadori too deep for their first potting. This hides its beautiful base. Because of the bullet damage, the front of the tree lost a lot of live tissue. That was expected when I shot it in the back. Subterranean termites then ate it up below the bark. I should treat this at some point.

I top-dressed the soil with red/black lava. See my post in the soil forum for more information.

The base of the tree is about 18-inches across (45.7cm). I potted it much higher this time.

Bases are boring when I bury them too deep.

Plenty of beautiful roots.

Termite and bullet damage. One of the bullets can be seen in the middle of the photo.

Saw your post on FB on this tree as well. I love it. I am sure you will do some awesome carving on it later. Just watch out for the possible buried bullets :)

I'm interested in hearing more lore related to the shooting of the tree. Is there any previous thread related to that? Were there fighting words involved?
It's my "Two clips and grow" technique. The tree looked at me funny.

Big base bonsai, bullets and beer at Bill Butlers Bayou. Badass.
Also, what? WHY?😆
Big bore ballistics
Bright brass blasting binary bombs
Breaking bursting boughs

"What?"
9mm hollow point.

"Why?"
To learn. To learn how the tree survives a sudden act of violence. To learn what happens when the wood is asked to fracture. To learn more about the texture of carving this wood.

Next test will come when I add a 30-06 deer rifle and Tannerite to my bonsai toolbox. Transonic wood carving.

It better be careful or I am sure you shoot its eyes out.

9 mm huh. I am sure you were being kind.

I still remember the time when my crazy uncle took me to the woods and told me he was gonna 'learn' me something.

I can't wait to see a thread about that topic.

In 2023, I bought a beautiful Sig Sauer .45 model 1911 for the sole purpose of taking down large game. Last October the tree I brought down was a beautiful thing. Sadly, it didn't survive. I'm doing an autopsy on it. I'll post the results after I've sanded it down.

I bet you have a blast when hunting yamadori.
I sort of get it though. You should try shooting one right in the chop site, into the growth rings. LIGHTNING STRIKE.
Yamadori: Mountain collected
Numadori: Swamp collected
Yamitori: Night/Dark/Extralegal collected

As for the lightning strike, the muzzle velocity will have to be more than twice what I'm currently putting out. That will be next year's project.

Thanks for the clarification.
You thinking 338 lapua or, anti-material rifle?
Can't wait.

338 Lapua? "Dear Santa, I've been a VERY good boy this year." Sadly, I'm not trying to take out a tree from neighboring states. What I really want for Christmas is a Browning BLR Lightweight '81 Lever-Action Rifle chambered in .30-06 with a compass in the stock! Well, I guess I can do without the compass.

If I get an AMR I won't need the Tannerite to take off the top of the tree.

All these tools are so high tech for me. All I got is a golok and a bowie. My trunk chop tools are way less fun than Bill's.

A Glock and a Bowie are very effective tools...😁 An Ed Bown 45 ACP is even better...

My Sig Sauer 1911 in .45 melts away all my cares.
Nowadays my favorite shooting tool is my air rifle. I think I only can prune branches with it. Trunk chop will take a month!
