Hello! I have a crowded large pot of 18 japanese black pine 2,5 year old seedlings that were gifted two me a month ago. They are healthy and doing good. I wanted to wire them this autumn (living in the netherlands, so autumn is around the corner). However due to the crowded pot, this js not possible. Im now thinking of either repotting all of them now in autumn witbout doing root work, dus cleaning and in a new pot and than wire in spring. Or do nothing now and repot and wire in spring. I have some experience with pines, but never did anything like this e.g. repot in autumn or repot and wire at the same time. What do you all think is a smart way to go about this.

Welcome!

Check out Eric Schraeder's videos on JBP. He does some repotting in autumn, at least with some younger trees, and talks about it why it's ok, although where he lives, the weather is pretty mild. Still, spring is ideal, so consider why you want to get them separated now.

You probably won't get much extra growth through the remainder of Autumn or Winter so no real advantage doing it now.
In Spring you have the opportunity to do some root reduction and adjustment to begin developing good nebari.

If your seedlings have been overcrowded for several years it's unlikely you'll be able to separate them without some root reduction so I doubt that repotting without root work will be possible.
