I have been seeing a lot of oblique references to this information in the Charlotte and Blue Ridge Bonsai Society groups, but I wanted to make sure that I publicize this to as broad an audience as possible. Bruce Appledoorn is closing his nursery and "retiring" from the retail trade, though he isn't selling his property or moving in the traditional sense. He is going to be spending time in Cost Rica helping with reforestation efforts, in addition to other cool things people do when they retire. I thought I had posted a nursery visit thread here, but cannot locate it. Bruce owns one of the two nurseries in North Carolina that belong to the American Conifer Society. His nursery is packed full of conifers - including many trees that have been in pots for a long time. His last open day will be July 4 - so I highly recommend you visit if you live within a few hours.

All of his inventory is 30-40% off, and bring cash and he will cover the sales tax. We're talking 8' tall deodar cedars for $70, massive Japanese white pines for $100, big Norway Spruce for $25, etc. I even grabbed a Carolina Hemlock since they are native and somewhat threatened. Great deals - and Bruce is a great guy so I want him to transition to the next phase of his life with a big send-off of retail sales.

Here's the back of my car from my visit today. We were here last week as well :)

You are going to be very busy in the next couple weeks, I can’t imagine you stopping at one carload or two…😁 I’d for sure go if closer.

I’m going to try and go before I leave for vacation, was there still a lot left?
He is in a very remote location. He used to do landscape contracting for the entire Asheville market, but then pulled back to just the nursery, and now is getting to an age where he is planning on his "next stage". He has extensive grounds with landscape trees in the ground... but even with his backhoe he doesn't want to bother with the hassle of selling them. Many of his trees are under-potted... they have been in their pots for a long time. I truly just bought 4 x 8' tall deodar cedars in 3 gallon pots. Trees with 3" trunks in five gallon pots, etc. When you visit there do not just go to the hoop houses. Go behind the barn. Cross the bridge over the creek - and if you don't know where that is ask him. He will never sell all of his inventory, and though he wants to donate the remainder of it before he leaves for Costa Rica, I'm not sure about the logistics. I'm not him and I don't want to sound judgemental so all I will say is that there is a lot there... and there will be a lot there after July 4.

And by the way, if you go there mention me and this web site. I told him I would be promoting his sale and it will make him happy :)

Also... I plan on going back next week for my third trip. :)

Sweet thanks, I’ve been there a couple times and he has great stuff. I was suppose to go with Horace at MaplesnMore nursery, but we will see. I know he is busy, I’m going up there in the morning so I will have to see if he can make the trip, he is a busy guy so who knows.

I was supposed to go with Horace, but I’m going to see Horace in the morning. He is going to watch over some trees while I’m on vacation.

lol. You had me confused for a second. I thought to read Apeldoorn, which is a city fairly close by and when I saw the trees.. Ah well. No luck, no cigar!

Ive been a few times over the years. I stopped by a couple of weekend ago and picked up various hinoki. I meant to look at the JWP but forgot. He has so many species and varieties that its hard to stay focused. Great guy and story.
I wish I had time to go back before close but not sure that I will.

I’d jump at this opportunity if I could make the time (and had the space) but sadly, I’ll have to leave the spoils to others here. I hope folks post pics of what they buy here so I can at least admire what I missed out on. :)

SOunds like something great for a club, or even a bonsai trader to go out to and take a larger number of trees of his hands for suitable prices on both sides.

I was in the area at South Mountains State Park so I went back for the last day.
I got a 3 gal Hinoki nana. 3 gal Scots Pine - Penguin, and a Colorado Blue Spruce. Ive never grown spruce so its a great chance to learn about the species.
The best pick may be an Ara-Kawa (rough bark) JWP shown below after a little clean up.

Here is the Blue Spruce after cleanup. It has a noticeable graft from all angles except for one. A slight counter clockwise turn makes it unnoticeable
