Any one had Tokoname pots cracked from being on the ground over winter?

This week, I noticed 2 of my Tokoname pots ( 1 large Robin egg Koyo and the other one is unglazed Shuho) were cracked when I went to lift them off the ground and to put them on the display stand. I believe this is the first time this happened to me. We had a very cold winter this year and rather quickly warm up, Im wondering if thats the case. Have anyone else experienced this? Thanks

I personally haven't experienced but i read somewhere that tokoname pots can crack in the cold. So best to protect em and make sure they're frost-resistant.

Alot can depend on the shape of the pot and how it was stored. Pots with incurved top lips can crack as soil expands when frozen for instance. Freezing mulch can also put stress on the pot from the exterior. FWIW I haven't pulled my pots out of the mulch piles yet to check this year. We got to 3 F a couple of nights so who knows....fingers crossed.

I’ve had Tokoname pots (lots of them) for thirty years. Never had a casualty from freezing and some have seen below 0 F a few times. Any pot can crack if it’s subject to the right conditions. Some are more prone like some Chinese made pots and even some western made pots

I set them on the ground in the winter.
The coldest temperature these pots have experienced is 9 degrees with no cracking.
All my pots are unglazed clay.

Fwiw SUSTAINED heavy freezing what cracks pots. The cold freezes the soil through and freezing expands water (ice) if the pot has incurved overhanging lip or a point where the design has a narrower mid point or some other constriction that won’t let the soil expand (upwards) against the sides the pot will crack. Also if the pot has a crack in it water can get inside, freeze and expand. Just like freezing cracks large boulders.

Here’s the cracked Koyo…The round unglazed Shuho one was cracked on both side all the through the round pot and bottom so I had to do an emergency repot, it’s in many pieces now once the tie down wires removed so I didn’t feel the need to take pics.

Is the pot strongly incurved as Rockm said? Or was your soil very dense? That's the only mechanism I can think of for one of their pots to crack. The crack is the right location if it is "enclosed ice expansion."

The little shits love to climb up and knock pots over! Then they act all cute and innocent like "what?".

So sorry about the pot. Stuff like this always seems to happen. It’s maddening.

We mulch all pots into the ground with bark drainage underneath each pot, the cover the entire shooting math with medium bark.

No cracked pots from cold 7 years, however the lowest temperature sustained for at least a week has been12F during this period.
