Any idea what this white line is on my cryptomeria?

I purchased this tree several months ago. It had moss grown up the trunk and I pulled it back and restyled the tree. As it has started to dry out up the trunk it has formed this white line. Any idea what is causing this and if I should change something to prevent it?

Approximately. It had just been neglected and had grown up the trunk and was soaked.

As you can see the moss has already started to grow back on the trunk, I was wondering if I needed to take a nylon or tooth brush and try to brush it off.

You can paint some vinegar on the trunk to kill the moss. I bet thats just calcium deposit on where the edge of the moss was.

Thanks for the tip! Just regular undiluted white vinegar or mixed with water?

Can I just use a brush to get the calcium off or should I just leave it?

Yes, regular vinegar. You can just leave it.
