Almost ridiculous how ez it was to collect this one. Apparently a ground hog had dug under it many years ago killing off half the tree and neatly compacted a rootball. Only took 5 mins to cut two tap roots and the whole rootball came up perfectly. It's in a mini raised bed as I want it to have the best chance of survival this year, mostly likly grafting will begin next year. Fun score I must say, and any flat cuts you see I just cut dead branches to fit in the car

Any chance you can get your hands on some pumice- Dry Stall would do just fine. Straight pumice is ideal for collected junipers, but a 50-50 mix with the soil conditioner would be ok I think. If you just planted it, I think you'd be ok with a quick redo.

Good luck.

not my first rodeo and I appreciate your snide and concerning comments, but that's just a raised bed not a grow box. I am completely out of pumice this year-My last large juniper used the last of my pumice for the year and I didn't plan on getting this tree it was kinda now or not. I'm in my garden 3 times a day and monitor all my tree's I fail to see how this is different from my pines, maple elms etc that are in the ground as well.

I would think that would stay far too wet, no?

no, it's planted in the ground and it's a raised bed and it drains fast-It dries out relative quickly and I have pines planted in the ground just like this for years to recover and they do fine till I can get them into a pot/flat.

Wow. Guy just offered an opinion.

Concern was from dav4 and I have nothing against his comment and I appreciate Brian skill and experience but I know when he says good luck or the like there more to it and not genuine, hinted at the fact that he quote what he disagreed with. I've been doing this for a years-ground growing- and not sure how this small raised bed is different from my other grow out beds-it's actually better then the ground as it's all clay here, and I harbor no ill will tward anyone

This is the opinion. The response was a bit of an overreaction.

Some kind of common juniperus chinensis would be my guess. Has nice foliage but I want something more compact, I have kishu and regular shimpaku but I'm thinking itoigawa would be nice for this one. Not much will happen to this till next year but I try and update all my thread as things happen!

good score, stoked for you.
You have experience grafting?

I do, I've done pine, ficus maple and the like. I'm gonna keep my head out for some itoigawa whips to start the grafting next spring.-i'll need to study the tree much more to see where I want to go with it as I'm unsure at this point.

Nice tree and it looks like it is going to be a fun project.

Any updates on this one? Collecting larger juniper stock can be hit or miss, so I'm wondering how it's doing so far this year, particularly with the HOT weather we've had over the last 6 weeks.
