picked up another big juniper from the same lady I got the last one. Need help with an ID though. The lady said "it looks like a grey owl" but it wasn't tagged and she didn't seem too sure. Any thoughts?

I didn't think so. I did some of my own research and didn't think there was a resemblance based on pictures I've seen. I like the tree. Just wish I knew what it was! Lol

Yea definately not grey owl... As far as parsons, I think I'd have to see one in person cuz when you Google search parsons juniper it looks more blue-ish.

Zac, working with scale juniper is basically the same no matter what the specie or cultivar. It's a question of scale (proportion). Be it kishu or torulusa the growth patterns are the same but the scale is different. So if you recognize proportions in growth habits then it makes "ID" less important and the size of the tree to accommodate that scale (proportion) of the foliage to trunk size the important factor. Confusing enough? ;-) Try imaging Torulusa or Postrata on a shohin. The most beautiful, twisted, huge, fantastic trunk that you could imagine Just wouldn't work on that trunk for shohin. So, no matter what you don't know you have, you still have to work with scale (proportion)

Good point Gary. I guess it doesn't really matter. Now just to figure out how I want to style this thing! Everything is up top. We shall see!

Nice find, is that just a 2 gallon nursery pot?
Yea it came in a 7 gallon pot but I wokred out all the old nursery soil and reported in a smaller nursery pot I had with bonsai soil. Don't have a good pot big enough yet, but I didn't want to keep it in that nursery "mud".

If it was mine I would wire pretty much all those upper branches and bring them down.
That's what I was thinking. I'm just worried about have no apex lol. I'm going to have a flat top juniper lol. I'll have to look at it when the time comes I guess.

Once you get a few of them wired down with some bendy twists and such hopefully an apex will present itself. If not, once they are wired down you should get some back budding on top and then you can modify your design later.

Does it have juvenile and adult foliage present at the same time? Does the adult foliage get long and stringy?
Yes all the outer foliage is that scaley/stringy stuff and it has juvenile needle foliage on the insides.

If you just done this its best to give it a break to let it recover before stressing it more.
