And What Are You Most Proud Of?

@Bonsai Nut I have read at least a couple posts if not more regarding Mountain Bike Expeditions... When you go out to ride... What makes you want to peddle more , than the day before?

Well... I like to keep my HDLs above 80 so I don't die of heart disease :) That's about 50% of it. But the other 50% is the pure joy of being out in nature - and leaving the crowds of southern California behind if only for a few hours. A few weeks ago I saw a red fox on the trail right in front of me. They aren't known to range this far south, so I called it in to the ranger who in turn reported it to the field biologist for the national forest. It was very cool to experience and to share that experience with others who I knew would be interested and excited. But I can't say it was an "accomplishment" so much as getting off my butt and living life. Plus it keeps me motivated to go out and hit the trails even when I don't want to because I am feeling lazy.

You know when I lived in Venice and Santa Monica... every morning I would ride my bike up and down the bike path on the beach for hours... before going to work. It was funny cause with five million plus people being only a field of sand away... it felt so alone and quite. Especially when it was foggy... every morning the dolphins would be swimming up and down the coast.

Also... seeing that we lived only two blocks from the ocean... we made it an evening ritual to go and say good bye to the sun, as it dipped below the horizon and into the sea for the day.

Is amazing how much breathing room you can find, if you want too.

If you are talking proud as in life; that is one thing if you are talking proud of accomplishments; as in bonsai I would say my work with Mugo Pines, and how to handle them so they don't die. Even in the face of a vast push back about their care and all of those who told me that they cannot be grown I was just stubborn enough to hang in there knowing that I was right, and waiting for my work with them to vindicate what I have been saying.

I don't see it much any more but it was only a matter of a couple of years ago when many of the talking heads of bonsai claimed that the Mugo was an inferior tree and that it could only be grown in the cold Northern climates. Almost every excuse one could imagine was dredged up to inform me that a Mugo could not be grown here in their particular state. Then it was claimed the Mugo could only be grown in my particular state, then it was claimed it could only be grown in my back yard. In the end many are finding out, as I have been teaching, that the Mugo Pine can be grown if repotted at the right/wrong time of the year. You figure that one out.

Don't know what "proud" means, but when I made boom-boom in the toilet, my Dad acted like HE sank a hole-one!!
Boy;--- is that a way to diminish the way people have been opening up their experiences to an often less than friendly public? Good for you that you would waste your first post to this forum with a potty reference, you ought to feel proud about that. May the next swirly be yours.

I'm proud that I'm still alive and not in jail. Seriously. I've been in car wrecks, set on fire, had guns pointed at me 3 times and struck by lightning. I also have had my fair share of run ins with the police.
I'm proud of my daughters. Both now married to great guys. The newest son in law is petrified of me but he'll come around.
As for bonsai I'm proud to be a member of this forum. I actually have people pm me asking for advice! If it werent for this place and all of the wonderful members I would have never made it as far in bonsai as I have. And Im proud I made it to Bonsai Godzilla status. A very coveted title. To me.

But the thing that I'm proudest about and the most humbling thing at the same time is Vance Wood calling me a friend.
Even though we have differing political points of view. We have fun when we get together and don't let that come between us. Because true friends don't let that happen.
He took me under his wing and has helped me so much I will never be able to pay him back.
