American Larch, Larix laricina "Deborah Waxman"

I used half pumice and half pine bark/compost mix. From what I read these larches like somewhat moist soil and a decent amount of organic matter. And yeah, the pot mine came in was pure pine bark.

I purchased another larch this winter, Larix Occidentalis, or our native Western larch. It was potted in what was basically mud. Pure, unaerated organic material. From what I've read Western Larches don't grow well in wet soils, unlike Larix Laricina. So I think this was a poor choice for this plant. I removed most of the soil, which I know can be dangerous, and replaced with the same pumice/compost mix. The roots didn't look very happy to me. We'll see if it survives:
