Good morning! Here are a couple photos of an American Beech I have been working on for about 5 years. It was originally sourced as 7' tall nursery material. I've never been a huge fan of AB. Large leaves, slow development, and very few examples of really good ones have always led me away from this species. This one is trying hard to change my mind. A large tree at 45" over the table, it is paired with a 22" oval from Eli Akins of Waldo Street Pottery. The container has some orange/brown speckling that really shines once the leaves go brown for the winter.

Very nice! That is a good example of what can be done with nursery stock, it’s a lovely and accurate natural example of beech. American beech and sycamore are my two favorite trees in nature. Another good one John 👏

Thank you, Judy!

Beautiful example!

Any concerns where you are (not sure where you are) about beech leaf disease? It’s in my area and rapidly moving east. I’m anticipating it on my trees within a year.

To be honest, I was not even aware until I posted this tree on FB.

Very awesome Beech!
You mentioned that it was 7' tall from the nursery. Did you chop it back to its lowest branch? Or was there a bud? Or did you chop to a bare trunk?

It was chopped near the existing top and several branches were already growing below. A couple more branches budded out after the chop.

You really need to tell that Beech so stop showing off!

Mine are already in the brown leaf phase.
