Alibaba Akadama

Besides the tariff on goods from China, which would still be a good deal, one would wonder why akadama which would be sourced from Japan be sold by a Shanghai firm at 8.00 a pop..

Anyone interested in checking this out?

Cheers

It is probably not akadama. It is probably some local calcined clay. I’m trying to find out from the manufacturer if they import it but probably not.

If you check out the link and go to the Akadama bags. Then blow the image up. It says product of Japan.

Didn’t have a whole lot of time to search, but was left wondering the shipping cost at that low price. Also how did it get shipped to Singapore from Japan to sell at that price unless they are actually shipping from Japan?

Cheers

They don’t have to ship it from Japan to China. All they need is a wholesaler in Japan and They could be drop shipping the soil from Japan direct to the buyer. They’re probably just a middleman.

When I looked at the page, it said $190 but I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being more than that based on where you are.

But they also talk about being able to do custom sizes, custom labeling. I don’t know that they’re actually selling those bags specifically. I have messages into them to confirm. In a chat, they seemed to indicate it comes from China, whatever it is that they’re selling.

Yeah but that’s for one bag up to some amount. At 100 bags even if the cost is $1000 to ship you’re doing pretty well.

If it’s being sold as “Ibaraki akadama” it’s misleading or fake. Ibaraki is a prefecture in Japan where akadama is quarried/collected. The soil is stripped out of the ground.

When I went to Alibaba and entered 100 bags, it came out to $2,404.26 or $24/bag. $600 for the product, $1800 for shipping. I currently get my 14 liter bags of akadama at $32/bag, so this Alibaba deal would offer 25% savings, if the product delivers.

This of course assumes no tariffs...

If that rate is for one regular size bag of akadama, then you're paying 3x as much as ordering it from someone already in the U.S.

Thought it was 190 for the 10 bags at $8 each

You get your akadma local or online?

They do have samples but I assume they have the $190 shipping cost for one sample. Would be interesting to see if it is legit though

The Chinese company is likely just a middle man. Based on what I know, akadam is really cheap in Japan and that's a big reason it is so popular. In the US we pay mostly shipping for this fancy dirt.

I wonder how import tax is being handled with something like this.
