I bought a smaller Kwanzan cherry tree like the ones that are in a rack and at the stores in the spring with the big plastic bag filled with soil. I wanted some color and flowers in the spring. This year I bought a flowering crab apple same place. Of course they are both grafted. I would like to air layer some low branches on the Kwanzan and the top out of the crab apple. Has anyone tried this and been successful? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good luck with that one - my Kwanzan Cherry turned to dust on a whim. I've never seen such a weak tree - it gave a freak flower in November last year and in February it was a dry thin bread stick. I have twigs on the compost pile for six months that are stronger.
Well, at least I got my cherry blossom in Florida!

Mine also died very easily... but I do like its flower though

Wow, I hope I do better than that. I am in the right zone area for them and at almost the end of winter here lots of buds are on the Kwanzan. You two guys are in a lot warmer zones than I am and I wonder if they need a cold cycle in winter so they can go dormant.?

Kwanzan cherry trees grow best in USDA zones 5 to 9 and tolerate much colder temperatures than other cherry trees. And they do like lots of water they say, not sopping wet but always make sure they are damp.

Crabapples airlayer with ease. I was able to easily root Kwanzan cherry in sealed container with bottom heat.

Do you think cherry cuttings are better than air layering? I have some ugly straight branches and main trunk that I would like to air layer from my yoshino and weeping yoshino cherry in the next couple of days or so. Would love to hear your methods, thanks!

Hi ILO. Maybe you meant to contact rodeo. I think he is the expert not me on these things. I have never done cutting and been successful and air layering the same thing. In both cases I did them wrong and I have learned a lot since. I will try air layering crabs and the Kwanzan this year after new growth hardens off. We will see how it goes. Good luck with your experiment. Best, August

Oops, still getting the hang of the forum... Thanks for the reply and good luck with both!

I will follow this post if you wouldn't mind posting an update. I will create one as well once I get some better insight into the process. Here are the two trees I was referring to.
