My father has a Crimson Queen tree that I did my first air layer on back in April. I peeled off about an inch and a half of bark and stripped the cambium and applied a powdered rooting hormone. I used sphangum moss only and wrapped it up. I would check every few weeks but only small nodes appeared. Then in early July I stripped more cambium off as I thought I didnt do enough the first time then cleaned the area with IPA wipedown. I then applied Clonex purple gel and rewrapped it up and would check again every month.
Finally I looked in October and roots galore!
I cut off the branch and used a chopstick and metal pick to spread out the roots. I repotted in mostly potting soil and also some vermiculite and sphagnum moss. Hopefully this lasts through the winter so I can pot up into a bonsai in the spring!
