Just wondering what trees I would be able to have in the hot afternoon sun this summer. I think I know the answer but started second guessing myself. The front of my house faces SE (gets morning sun) and I have most of my meager collection on the front porch. I'm running out of space to keep everything without it getting congested. So I was thinking on moving some to the backyard. The spot I'm planning on using will get full afternoon sun from (depending on the time of year of course) noon till sunset (no shade). I also plan on keeping anything in a pot smaller than 4" out of the afternoon sun unless I put the sprinkler on a timer. Which I do in the front when I go on vacation.

Here's the list I put together of the plants I have that may do well in afternoon sun.
Mugo Pine
Scotts pine
JBP
Chinese Elm
Jacqueline hillier elm

I have quite a few topicals that I didn't list but can you burn up a TBF in MI summer or a bougainvillea ?

The answer is it depends. Get your red pen out and LMK if I'm wrong please. :)

These are the plants that get sun until 4-5pm in my backyard. Direct sun all summer, and it gets pretty damn hot here.

Junipers
Bougainvilleas
Bald Cypress (not sure how those would do with your winters, but I imagine they would do fine)
Pomegranates
JBP
Ficus (just keep well watered)
Crepe Myrtles

Give siberian elm a go……. The seeds sprout instantly, and they actually get more color than Chinese elm most of the time.
They need more sun than Chinese elm…….. lots and lots of sunshine .
The one in the first picture was just brought out from an 18 hour per day grow house!!!!

All of my tropical's get full sun on the south side of my house. My azalea's and ficus are on the east side and get morning sun, afternoon shade.

That means I got some right! Thank you. :)

Very nice! I got a great JBP from you last year so I'll totally try an elm. So pot size shouldn't matter as long as they don't dry out?

Good to know about the Trop's! Figured if it could survive Africa then it should hate MI. :) I'm keeping the azaleas in the front and it's one of the reasons for the congested front porch space.
