advice on starting a ror

i found a couple large lava rocks yesterday and want to do a root over rock.

what would you suggest for trees that work well for this.i want something that develops roots quickly.

i'm hoping to put an order in soon with evergreen garden works and i was thinking one of there elms(i've wanted an elm anyway).
would that be a good choice,and what size should i get,2 3/4",4",or gallon pot?

Trident maple, start small; 4" pots because you need thin, pliable roots.
The rock matters; use a good, dark, hard stone.
The work should be done in spring. A maple isn't likely to survive having its roots bared, and strapped to a rock in July.

I actually was just about to put in an order for some japanese and trident maples to make forests, clumps, and RORs. Funny.
