Advice needed on repotting a recently shipped JBP

Hello everyone,
I just received a large Japanese Black Pine. The previous owner suggested I repot it this Spring but I am concerned about doing it too soon after receiving it. It arrived from Oregon to Louisiana, both Zone 8, but spent 4 Days in a box during transit. Depending on the source, JBP should be repotted between January and March. How long should I wait before I repot? Tree is very healthy.

If you have no chance of frost, you can repot now up to time candles start pushing. It is a bit easier/better to repot when on dry side, wait a couple days after last repotting (this could also be accomplished by your shipping).

Always listen to the tree. Regardless of location, JBP should be re-potted just as the buds start to swell. That could be January in FL or April/May in MA. Given the current weather the eastern half of the country is experiencing, I wouldn't want to re-pot for a bit. Good luck with your new tree.

Nice. Moss is starting to get a little out of hand though......
Looks healthy. Watch when you water and if it flows thru relatively quickly you might have time to set up a plan. Like repotting next year after it gets accustomed to your climate.
If you use a different soil than what it is in now maybe repot this year and at the time Dav4 indicated. You should know how your soil holds water and dries out.
I'm learning these JBP myself.
Use the search feature....This place is a container growing library, browse thru and study.....
Now you get to buy "pot"......... Don't be stingy, give your tree some fancy clothes...

When I watered last night after unpacking, the water did not drain well and pooled on the surface. I realized this morning that the too small turntable may have bee blocking the drainage holes so I removed it from underneath. I will continue to keep an eye on water drainage over the weekend. I will also move the tree tonight to the gazebo where it will be covered incase of frost this weekend.

I got the tree from Wee Tree. They were great. I am happy with the tree. It does need work of course. A lot of branch refinement for ramification. I'll be cleaning off the moss tomorrow and taking a closer look at the tree. With my work schedule, I haven't even seen it in daylight yet. LOL

If Wee Tree said it needs to be repotted, it means they saw that it was due, they do know what they are doing. But you should decide yourself, based on your observations, but I would guess it is probably due.

If you have other pines, it is helpful to get them all into the same potting mix, so you will be able to develop an intuitive sense of when they will need water. Louisiana is HOT in the summer, and it is good to have a sense of when things will need water. JBP should do well near Monroe.

My sense of style dislikes this pot for this tree. Repotting to a rectangle of some sort would be an improvement, and it will give you the opportunity to see the full extent of the nebari and work root placement & structure. If it were mine, I would repot as suggested, shortly after danger of frost has past. If you repot this spring, do no other work on the tree for the year. No major pruning. Possibly skip candle pruning. If you do not pull needles from last years growth, in 2017 you can "candle prune" back as much as 2 or 3 years if you kept enough old needles to have needles back to where you prune. Let it grow and get bushy this year after being repotted. The response in 2017 will be stronger if it has time to recover after repotting. Wiring in late summer, autumn or winter is not as big a stress as other treatments, you could probably do wiring if a "plan" leaps to mind. I'd let it grow at least a year before deciding how to style it, a good plan may come to you has you get more familiar with how it looks from all angles. Nice tree. I wouldn't mind having it on my bench.
