Hello All~

I have a baobob that I want to bring in to the greenhouse to give it a head start on the growing season.

Does anyone have an idea as to when I should start watering and feeding it?

Thanks in advance for your replies

You can bring it into the greenhouse but no watering/misting/high humidity until it has sprouted new leaves.

A sudden cold spell and wet growing medium- even when it has sprouted will lead to the tubers rotting.

What's the temperature in the greenhouse?

Thanks for the reply Lennard .

60-70F is what it's kept at and it's hanging upside down with no soil at this time .

What would you recommend as an ideal growing medium for it?

i would wait until you see signs of life, even in a HOT area the baobabs start growing later than most other species...the big thing is drainage-i mix my soil with river sand, the stony type:)

Thanks Jason.
Can you describe your soil composition, other than the sand, please?

Yes, the trees bud out very late - even in the hot climate here in South-Africa.

I use a third filter sand, a third good garden loam and a third well rotted compost. But my growing conditions are different than yours so I would advice you to stay with your normal mix for deciduous trees.

Interesting enough here in my town, which is not the natural area where Baobab occurs, I have seen them growing in gardens where the soil is a dark clay. The trees get watered right through winter when they are resting and they do not rot!

......but in a pot they rot easily when they are watered while resting.

Strange?

i pot everything in a mixture of potting soil + river sand.Even in mid winter in my area maximum temps don't drop below 18 degrees celcius,so i leave the baobabs in their pots + give a watering or 2 right through winter....
