Added 2 BIG Boxwood & 4 Ilex to my collection :D

I know that but in the long run it will speed things up. W/o pinching, I won't have several (sacrificial) branches near their base and nice branch movement.

It slows down some at the beginning but will help hasten things up later and I will have better branches in the end. With later chops, you end up with straight branches then start building ramification...I will have most of those then. Choose your poison I guess. ;)

This is a really powerful tree. Maybe next year, pick the branches that are going to be part of the main design. Are you going to do any carving? Might help the look of the straight section. However, in time, when the branches are in place and the pads fill in, the straight section will not be very visible anyway.

This one is going to look great when it is potted up.

Inspired by your shohin. :)

Yes, I will do some carving and that straight section will definitely get some attention. ;)

Thanks!

Here it is after some reduction. Airlayer going on one of the branches started on 3/31.

The airlayer separated around mid-September (less than 6 months)

Another airlayer started on 9/25/2013

I'm in zone 8b as well and would not have thought an air layer was possible that late in the year.

I am not sure either. We should know if it works by March or April next year. :) ;)

Whether it is a success or a failure, I will post the result.

We have a similar attitude. Right or wrong, you learn something every time! And thanks for the detail pics. I was wondering about how I could create my own air layer pots. Simple pinholes and wire. Why didn't I think of that?

Depending on the hole size, you can put mesh under or sometimes I just use a thick layer of sphagnum moss to hold the soil from going through. The cheap & thin nursery pots works great for this, can even be re-used again after. :)
