this reminds me...i need to go back to that link with a bunch of pictures of your trees again :) good find...i'm trying to decide what do to with one of my own maples...i think the answer for me right now is enjoy it and let it grow. but i'll be thumbing through your pictures for inspiration

Is there some reason why you left the big knobby wound in the middle of the trunk? No way to reduce that and seal it up?

Nice! Did I miss something on the root work or were those near perfect radial roots under the soil line when you bought it? Also, what's the height? 15 inches is my guess.

That was my first thought too...maybe it was an air layer? Either way, definitely some nice nebari to build on!

Looking good!

My first thought as well! Looks like an eyeball! Maybe just read Grouper's piece on focal point Bonsai design? Lol

Great start to a tree there...

Edit: NM- just saw you listed the variety above! Lmao

I spoke to the grower and he said all of their trees were grafted - but after seeing my photos he figured that the graft itself grew roots.

Turns out the graft was buried under the soil and this nebari was completely hidden to me until I repotted it.

Cost? €40 or $45 to you...

Wow! That's an amazing prize for some top-notch material. Good work!
Indeed.

I got it at the "Dick van der Maat" maple nursery in Boskoop here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/norbury/sets/72157641862755735

This grower produces 1,000 different cultivars and this "momoiro koyasan" is his own patented cultivar. The price is based on the diameter of the tub it's in: 40cm(16inches)=€40, 50cm(20inches)=€50, regardless of height, age etc
