Long time lurker, first proper post.

Have watched a few videos on starting a shohin juniper from nursery stock (Mirai live, Bjorn on bonsai empire, bjorn on eisen-en, bonsaify) and decided to give it a shot.

I am based in Melbourne Australia and purchased this material from Conifer Kingdom near Mount Dandenong. Fairly straight trunk but the nebari appeared to have potential, the foliage and branching was dense and the top had potential for an airlayer or jin feature.

Trunk diameter was about 3cm at the and maybe 3.5cm including root flare. Assuming some slow thickening over time and aiming for a shohin tree with a height/girth ratio of 6, i decided to aim for a final height around 24cm.

I took the point on the trunk at about 24cm and ringbarked and contorted it with heavy wire. I aim to airlayer this off as my next tree and use the remaining exposed trunk below the cut point as a potential future apical jin.

I followed the basic steps shown in the videos above. I found bjorn's 3 part video on bonsai-u / eisen-en the most helpful. Essentially 4 stages:

1. Trim the downward growing foliage of each lignified branch + crotch growth to reveal the structure
2. Wire each lignified primary branch
3. Position each primary branch
4. Wire and position the secondary branches to form pads
5. Trim the pads

After all primary and secondary branches wired (first image probable front):

Also got about 50 potential cuttings, to which i applied rooting hormone gel and placed into a mix of pumice and sphagnum:

We are just approaching the end of spring, so I will focus on nursing the plant through our hot summer and autumn, aiming to address the roots and repot early next spring in about 8 months.

This process took about 6 hours, so I have a new appreciation for the work you all put in on larger specimens!

Please let me know any feedback, tips or advice and thank you for making such a wonderful community on enthusiasts.

Can you explain why this species is called Juniperus X media Shimpaku?
What it was labelled as when purchased. I have seen x-media used in many nurseries - eg. X-media shimpaku, x-media sargentii, x-media Blauws. Whether they are not labelled correctly or are crosses/hybrids, i do not know.

Nice job, what is the plastic bag for on the apex of the tree? I don’t see any media in it.

Thanks

For the top to be airlayered off. I have filled it with sphagnum moss. (Couldnt fit enough attachments in the first post to show it filled).

Really happy with the progress made in just 5 months.

Excited to repot in early spring in around 4-5 months to work the roots and nebari + get into an appropriate pot. Would love any help here! Round? Oval? Rectangle? Im thinking an unglazed oval for the curves to match the somewhat feminine curve of the trunk line. With the base just off centre given the direction of the apex and the point branch to that side.

Still not sure if the jin will stay, be extended into a spiralling shari down the trunk or go. Height is still around 24cm excluding the jin. The front also is still up for grabs pending the root structure. The last two images are what i feel are the best options, but would love to hear what others think.

I will post the next update at repot. Thanks again everyone for your helpful comments and threads.

Couple of things
Your design skills are far above mine, you seem to have nailed the look from the get go (minus the Dr suess twirl at the top).

You've got a lot of wire, and some of it Xing itself, which when the tree grows, could ring your bark and kill branches. So watch it carefully.

When you do repot, you may want to allow the tree to grow and let the tips run. This will help with root regeneration after repotting.

All in all great stuff!

Thank you thats very helpful!

My wiring technique is still needing work and doing a whole plant with dense growth was challenging. I will have to get it iff as soon as the primary branches set and put on some thinner, cleaner wire to the secondary structure.

How long would a young juniper typically take to set?

Media X is a good cultivar, very nice dense compact foliage
