A wheelbarrow full with unknown Azalea

Someone wanted to get rid of his old garden plants.
5€ a piece was marked in the add.
Amoungst them an old unknown Azalea !!
I called the guy, took my spade, and jumped into my car.

This is what i came home with : A wheelbarrow full with unknown Azalea species.

I washed out the roots, pinched 99% of the flower buds and transplanted into a wooden crate.

How can I find out what type Azalea this is ?? Is it even an Azalea or is it an other Rhododendron??

I will post a better picture of the tree in the wooden crate tomorrow, its getting dark now.

The roots don't seem too much 'compact bonded' for and azalea.
Huge one though!

They look pretty workable to me. Nice find! You won't be able to determine the variety until they flower. (even then it can be difficult) There are a gazillion varieties and that's no joke. Many people leave at least one flower on new azaleas to help determine the variety.

As @Vin stated it is impossible to identify them without a bloom - nice haul though and update this when they do!

Many people leave at least one flower on new azaleas to help determine the variety.

I left a couple of flower buds, but they are still closed now, i think they will open in about 2-4 weeks, i guess.
If I got decent weather, I make another photo tomorrow.

And I hope you are ok despite all that Brussels' non sense.

Well what can I say, it was bound to happen sooner or later.....deep down we all knew.
Still it's a sad day for all of us, specially for the 34 dead and their families. And this number will increase due to the high number of seriously injured.

Like our prime minister stated: We must fight back, protect our way of live and take on our normal lives as of today....
That's what i'll try to do.

I was thinking myself the foliage was to high up and maybe i should cut it back more or less drastically later on.
But from your reactions I read to leave it as it is.
To be honest that was my first thoughts as well..
Now, I am not sure anymore?

No, it still needs to be cut back but the base and branching are nearly perfect for an oak style clump. Since you already pruned it and just repotted it I would let it settle in a bit while you decide on a final image. There's no need to rush it.

Don't worry about the species for now. It might come in time, but even if it doesn't it don't really matter..... You got something special there.

There is one downside however: there are no nebari ! it's just all fine roots starting directly from the base of the trunks.
I do not think it will ever develope nebari.

FYI.:
I placed it in lime free soil, a mix of Kanuma, Peat and Akadama 1/3 each.
I am feeding it special rhododenfron liquid feed, for now at 1/2 strenght and later on at full strenght.
Watering is done with collected rainwater.

What you lose with no Nebari you will gain in the drama of all that twisted branching. The negative space in red is the biggest issue you'll have to deal with in my opinion. You may want to lose that branch in yellow at some point in the future because it is really pulling the eye to that area and it doesn't have the same taper and movement as most of the others. Again, it's only my opinion based of the image. This tree really has some great potential!

Nooo, don't ditch that branch. That branch helps in the forest feel. If you cut that branch, the left group of the forest is a bit too small imho.

I'm not saying my image is the only way, it's just what I see. I do see what you're saying as well. Man, this piece has a lot of possibilities for sure.
