Thanks. I will look into shishigashira. That’s the way sheshigashira looks.
I’ll just have to wait til spring to see what the leaves tell us.[/QUOTE]Another possibility would be mikawa yatsubusa, I used to have one of them and it looked very similar out of leaf. Leaf is quite different than shishi, though.
Goshiki Kotohime?
Funny enough, I just made a post because I found the same variety and was intrigued. How has this one worked out for you?A local nursery just got these Japanese Maple “Mini Maples” from Iseli Nursery. They have the shortest internodes low on the trunk I’ve ever seen on any tree and look perfectly primed for my first attempts at mame. Just wondering if anyone has any experience working with these before?

I know it’s been a while… but I just got one of these in late winter and it still hasn’t leafed out. Did yours even make it to spring and leaf out? I fear I bought one DOD.Long gone I’m afraid
I'm in Nashville, Zone 7. The buds on my maples, Chinese elm and on most of the trees in the wild have started pushing out already.I have one and it’s still in dormancy. You haven’t listed your location yet so we have no idea if dormancy at this time is normal for your region.
Hmmmmm… yeah, you should be seeing foliage down there. Can you post a photo? Also, have you done the “scratch test”? (To scratch test you’ll need to make a small scratch in the bark to see if there is still green in the cambium indicating that the tree is most likely still alive)I'm in Nashville, Zone 7. A lot of the very fine branching is dead but the primary, secondary branching and trunk is green with scratch. The reason I was worried is because the nursery I got it from said they had just got it in a shipment (shipped from the same nursery as OPs) in early Feb and all the leaves dropped AFTER they got it. He gave me a discount because he thought it wouldn't make it. Maybe a hard freeze in during the shipment... not sure. I made sure not to keep it out below freezing.Hmmmmm… yeah, you should be seeing foliage down there. Can you post a photo? Also, have you done the “scratch test”? It’s just a waiting game now. As @19Mateo83 said there’s a good chance it may just take some time to wake up so all hope is not lost.A lot of the very fine branching is dead but the primary, secondary branching and trunk is green with scratch.
