A challenging Minnesota collected hawthorn.

I picked up this -Minnesota native- today from the Minnesota bonsai Society silent auction.
No one was bidding on it as it was tucked away in the back and well,,…pretty darn ugly.

Anyways , I got this beautifully barked but very problematic hawthorn.

the inverse taper is pretty bad, worse than I thought.
The dead top needs a chop and carve.

Removed the wire.

Then pruned back to get a better idea. Wow. So ugly. Rewire and trunk chop.
And a bad photo of the direction I’m going after cuttin down the dead stump.
So far, a fun but difficult puzzle.

Getting some color. I didn’t know if that would happen as this one is brand new to me, and I don’t know much about Hawthorne
