Ok.. THIS is my last consideration... I gotta calm down. 🤣

Pretty straight forward.. I gave it a “tad” of direction but still keeping my options open.

It’ll cost me between $.70 and $1.00 depending on what the DNR marshall says about the pictures... under 4”d is never over $1.00.

I’ve enclosed a picture of the most awkward “front” as well as my favorite “front”...

It’s got such big bends in that first 10 inches or so that the first 2 inches right out of the soil line standing straight up look weird.

When you repot this, I wonder if planting at an angle will help with a cohesive maximum bendy funky character that it’s got going on.

My first thought would be to plant that on a vertical rock and have it be a cascade- sort of what we see here with trees growing on old rock faces and in abandoned quarries.

Let me just say how much of a fan I am of people trying native tree. Most really aren’t the best, but I love (legally and with permission) finding a native tree with a decent trunk and seeing what it can be. Hats off to you for the elm!

Yes! Alot of the trick is gonna be that forward leaning angle.

What's your plan for that wound/ kinda looks like inverse taper park? Are you going to carve that out or let it go for now?
I am going to see “how it acts” this season.. the “plan” is to carve the outermost “knob” IN to create the desired shape/flow... but IF the wound acts a CERTAIN way.. i will actually attempt to carve from the “knee-pit” BACKWARDS. 😬😂

But THIS season..mere observation.. (as far as that scar elbow is concerned)

T’was a strange year for dormancy requirements.... Just had bud break a week or two ago....

I forgot before pictures!!

I lightly pruned and gently began setting structure...

(The branch angles make more sense with my theoretical “Best” planting angle/front combination ;) )

I like Ulmus.. so much response.

I’m not 100-percent sure of the best angle yet.. I’m workin’ on it.

I also thought i would document this here, too.. my favorite hardwood cutting taken from this guy upon collection last fall.E282C0D4-6CA9-49F3-9B20-D5C4E7732C91.jpeg

I notice everywhere I have cut a branch off the Am. elm, the wound kind of enlarges, and I worry it will cause reverse taper. Is this wound enlargement temporary?

I’ve found that Ulmus heal quickly and aggressively... this CAN cause swelling around existing “underwood”...

Using notch or concave cutters alleviates this concern by creating a recess OVER which the wound will heal.

With THIS tree... in the beginning there was a broken deadwood branch Attempting to be eaten by the callousing wounds... I needed to remove it, and essentially “gouge out” the internal wood while peeling back and only slightly shaving the bulging cambium callous. ...basically wound it MORE.. so it could heal more fluid and correctly.

🤓

Wire-bite was noted...

Guidewire replaced with trunk-hugging Guy-wire, in an attempt to “hold that pose” (for shoulder alone) Through the winter months.1697B2E6-688D-49A3-BAC3-1DFEE9418DF1.jpegE2698D09-AAF9-4584-9C34-91CF9911D7BF.jpeg
