Wow. That is awesome.

:D Nice bougie, what would you estimate the age to be?

You've tastefully carved and displayed the deadwood, it feels natural- not an easy accomplishment for a bougie.

I'd really like to see it in full flower then defoliated.

thanks for the words, everyone. no master here . this stump is one of sixty eight we collected from a hedge planted in 1982.

best wishes, sam

Great job Sam! The two year transformation is inspiring to say the least!

Very nice looks like a natural ancient tree. Have you let it flower? I wonder what color it blooms? Great job on the carving too.

Cool. 68 of them, how long did that take any pics? By hand or some machine help?

thanks for the additional comments.

best wishes for the holiday, sam

for ed. the variety is the common purple which blooms prolifically and whose shiny dark green leaves reduce with pruning. the tree flowers regularly, however, the blossoms are pruned, as the focus is on developing branch structure.

for monza:

the trees comprised a 100 yd long hedge separating a shopping center parking lot from the highway. the trees were destined for the landfill to clear the way for highway widening. myself and a friend swooped in, convinced the landowner and contractor to save/give us the trees. all were extracted in one day with the help of the contractor's backhoe and crew. sharing some pictures of the process

Where are the Thorns on that beast? My wife says her and her brother call those "poke and kill ya" plants :p

Feels so much better than Christmas...

Hope I get a score like that... *drools*

hi grimlore and newworld

about thorns. repetitive thorn pruning significantly reduces/all but eliminates thorn growth on older branches. the largest thorns grow on new growth, which are cut off early on.
will post images of other trees from the same batch which are developing nicely.

best wishes, sam

Wow! Great work Sam! We both think that is one steller project! And that is great information on the thorns we really had no idea :o

Sam, you hit the mother lode! Only a true bonsai lover can appreciate the art in that giant heap of stumps, and only a true bonsai nut would be willing to take on that giant heap of stumps.

thanks guys

the stumps on the ground resulted from several days of chainsawing tangled mounds of bougainvillea (as in #3). all 68 are alive and flourishing.
