[2019- ] Berberis I

Now that I made my "introduction" again I would like to kick start with this Berberis I bought a few weeks ago (not sure which berberis kind )

In the new container & hacked back


Looking for a shohin / mame size tree I feel that one of the 2 "trunks" should go but didn't want to cut something I'd regret later

Nice Berberis, good trunk.

Once established and growing, don't allow any segment of branch become longer than the first segments of your trunk. You want to avoid long straight segments higher in the tree.

May I ask which part is considered "first segment" I think this one deserve better pictures from all 4 faces

This one grew quite a bit in 1 month ? didn't really notice...

That's the first and second segment.
See how the second is equal to larger than the first....?

The longer ones up top are worse.

I would wait till it builds a month more of energy and cut it back somewhere within the second segments.

Thank you for that... so the "Second portion" is too thick with respect to the trunk / "1st portion" ?

So much for "you can't kill a berberis" ?

This started about a week ago affecting only few leaves so I didn't think it was nasty. And here it is now...

Underwatering? I don't think so it is being watered twice a day
Over watering? It is in pouzzolane so I don't think so either

Moved it to open shade for now. Anything I can do to help it?

I also lost 2 cotoneaster this year. Just when I finally thought I was back on track

Underwatering. Using a colander was a mistake for this species, they require a lot of water. I would take the colander and slip it into a pot of the same size (or slightly bigger) and backfill as necessary with bonsai soil. It may give you a second flush, it may not. Just have to wait and see.

Thanks for the input. I can't 'slip pot' it. I am sure the roots didn't 'hold' the substrate yet.

Moved it from full sun to partial shade hope it will recover

You misunderstood me. Take the colander and put it in a pot. Pot-in-pot. This will increase water retention and slow down how quickly the rootball dries from the exposed sides of the colander. Obviously don't touch the roots.
