2 years in. American elm seeds.

I don't normally plant seeds. But I grabbed these out of an elm just after I cut it down a couple years ago.
I grew some singles and tossed the rest in this 7 gallon bucket. It still had the dead J.M. stump in it.
There was no stratification needed. Whatever that is.
Just tossed them in. I didn't even cover them up.
I should have gotten after them last year so they would be easy to separate.
But since they are elms a saw works well too.
The largest one is just over 1 inch in diameter.
The smallest about pencil size.

After a little work with the saw this what I got.
Clumps. I really don't get into forest plantings but I think I may give one a try but I think I'll more than likely separate them some more or sell the ones that are too close together. Since I rent they went into 3 gallon nursery buckets filled with some recycled Napa floor dry to grow out.
I also saved this. The bottom of what I cut off. It's full of tap roots to start a whole new batch. I'm going to cut it into sections and plant them in buckets too. It's almost like having a never ending supply of trees. That hunk of wood in the center is what's left of the maple.
And of course my dog needed to get his paws in the picture.

All the clumps got their own buckets.
I don't like a forest plantings.

Clumps are cool!Starting many seeds this year of elm and zelkova.just enjoy it!
