    Struggling juniper needs help

All of a sudden over the last two weeks my Juniper has started looking ill. It gets watered as usual. It gets fed every other week. I think it wants to be repotted as it looks like it’s crawling out of its pot. I think I need to repot it. I need to use the same pot as I don’t have a new one...

    Repot aftercare on Shimpaku Junipers

Hello all. I recently acquired this beautiful little twin trunk Shimpaku Juniper. I did a repot on it about 6 days ago (later in the season than I’d like but it was bricked up pretty good). I was gentle as could be and I kept the roots mostly intact with about 20% total removal of the feeder...

(My) First styling on a new to me juniper

Picked this juniper up a few weeks ago, came from a guy who had it for 7 years but never styled it himself, he said he couldn’t figure out what to do with it. I believe it was probably styled before he got it as it had some really good bones to work with. Here’s what I started with. I decided...

Hail storm damage or dying Procumbens Juniper?

I repotted this Procum. Juniper about 3 weeks ago the week before we had an awful hail storm here in North Texas. Golf ball size. The browning is at lots of the tips on the canopy. You can see some new growth next to dead tips/broken branches. Scratch test shows super green everywhere.. Ive...

    Juniper Repotting for final styling

I have recently acquired two junipers from a local nursery with 3-4 inches of trunk thickness and I am thinking of doing the final styling without further development. My first step will be checking the nebari and transferring them to training pots. Then in autumn, I will make a small amount...

Which soil is best for thickening trunk of a juniper in a pot?

Hi all. Although I've been interested in bonsai making for a long time, I have recently got more serious into the hobby. I read a lot of documents, watched several videos and got a bit confused about best soil mix for trunk development in a pot, specifically for junipers. Is it wise to leave...

    Styling Advice (Gold Star Juniper)

Hello all! In a few days, I'll be putting this Gold Star Juniper into the basket it is sitting in most likely doing some root work in the process. I'm wondering if: 1. Is it okay if I do any pre-styling on this? 2. Any styling tips/advice for this particular plant? I'm worried if I leave as...

Root rot? Fungus? Larvae? Is this shimpaku junipers roots healthy?

I'm new to bonsai, I have around twenty trees but have only started bonsai this year so my experience is minimal. I recently bought what is claimed to be a shimpaku juniper online and encountered something I've never seen before, and from what I've researched, is due to an unhealthy root system...

    Juniper progression - feedback please

Hi! New to bonsai especially to juniper in the UK. I had this for 2 years - put in a pond basket last Spring. It is vigorous but not sure how to take this further. It does not seem to have a lot surface roots and the flakey bark seems not pursued with junipers unlike pines. Please advice.

    Itoigawa Juniper - Chuhin Sokan

Context: At the time of this first post, I’m still relatively inexperienced in bonsai and especially with conifers. I obtained this double-trunk Itoigawa pre-bonsai at a club workshop on 02 FEB 2025 - it was in a 2-gallon nursery container but appeared to have been slip-potted at least once...

Hello everyone! I recently tried my hand at bonsai making by restyling a nursery stock juniper. Comments and suggestions are welcome! I am very new so I'd love to improve. First Juniper, Grey Owl

The other day I picked up my first juniper from a local bonsai nursery. Said he believed it was grey owl juniper but wasn’t 100% sure. Asking for O'Piñons on these junipers

I'll start with this one. A $4 rescue from the clearance rack. I don't remember the cultivar, but the new growth gets a nice yellow color. It's been in the ground for about 3 years now. It's healthy and vigorous, and it seems to be ready for work. Is it worth trying? I planted it over a stone...

Show us your juniper winter colors please!

Winter is reaching our garden gates all across the northern hemisphere. This means junipers are turning color! For our own reference, and maybe for some worried beginners too, I think it might be nice if we share some of our gold, orange, purple, blue and greens. Nothing has turned here yet...
