    Valley Oak Progression

Point taken, but I think most of the real nebari is buried. Very little of the visible root will remain in the end (I hope). What you can't see is a flare of fused root that expands to about 8 inches wide and deep. I hope it throws lateral roots high enough that I can cut another four inches...

Need Ideas on my Olive Tree

A smaller trunk can work well as root-over-rock. This style works best with young stock, flexible roots that can grow and grip the stone. Adding the rock gives the illusion of a more massive base. Hardest part is finding the right stone.

    Valley Oak Progression

Update on this one. Last spring I made another cut on the fused roots then potted up into a box. I plan to leave the roots alone for at least a couple of years hoping the mass of fused roots throw out plenty of feeders. Other than that it's letting branches thicken and keep the squirrels off...

Questions on Propagating Tilia cordata (Small-Leaf Linden)

Well, that's disappointing. Looks like it probably is Triadica, but you can see my confusion. Leaves are similar in shape. Bark may be wrong....these have rough, pealing bark. Did not pay enough attention to the flowers. Disappointing because it's used extensively as a street tree here, yet...

Thanks for the tip! Successful or not with the cuttings, I'll be ordering from Brent.

Perhaps I have the ID wrong. Here's some pics. Please let me know if you think it's NOT Tilia.

Sorry, searched and couldn't find "eplov's propagation method". Can you provide a brief description?

Questions on Propagating Tilia cordata (Small-Leaf Linden)

Tilia cordata are used as street trees in my neighborhood, but for the life of me I can't find any in local nurseries. I love the mature trees, particularly in autumn when they have a mix of yellows, reds and green background with white berries. Crews are trimming trees now so I thought I'd...

I want to hear more arguments ..Bonsai Humor Thread No. 2

Don't defoliate until you get maximum enjoyment from the fall colors. Should be seeing golden brown any moment!

Do you add anything to encourage rooting of yamadori

Agree with everything you said. Instead of mycorrhiza additive I would suggest adding a small amount of the original field soil, or not bare rooting the tree. That should inculate your bonsai soil with the correct fungi, if needed.

What was I thinking? I'm still kind of a beginner at all this!

Don't cut any new growth off yet. You want as much as you can get to regrow the roots. I think you've got great raw material there. Leave it alone for a year while you consider your first styling.

Fresno Fall Sale and Auction Nov 15, 2025

A couple of pics from the event. It was a bit less well attended than last year, with fewer sellers too. Could be the uncertain economy. Could be the weather. Anyway good to catch up with folks. The Clark collection made some money and thinned out a few things. And it's always good to have...

A bonsai you designed on your own

The OP was a bit ambiguous about the starting material. He mentions cuttings and seed, but then says, "so not a bought tree that others have worked on". Does that include yamadori? Air layers? Large nursery stock? I can't tell from the first post. "Designed on your own..." may not mean...

    About Princess Persimmon

Here's one at the Clark Bonsai Museum - seedless, no males on site. Does a good job developing fruit on its own though.

    Multi trunk japanese maple

On the theory that you should work from the ground up (nebari first, then trunk, branches, etc) perhaps you should consider a ground layer in spring to get a more radial nebari.

Why the recent rash of sideways pictures?

I don't think people are doing it on purpose, but once you see they're sideways you can remove them, crop and try again. I'm told pics that are much taller than wide often get posted sideways. If you leave them sideways many will just ignore them.

    White Oak Wonderings

I would definitely put it in the ground for a few years to thicken that trunk up. It's not going to do much in that pot.

Why the recent rash of sideways pictures?

Still see lots of sideways pics. Hey folks, if pictures you post show up sideways, please delete them, resize or crop, and try again. I may just be old and cranky, but I'm not going to try to interpret sideways pics. I'm betting many like me will just pass by your post.

I think my Pomegranate is mad at me.

My understanding is that leaf curl in pomegranates can be caused by mites, fungi, or environmental stress. If you don't see bugs I'd try an anti-fungal spray.

    Strategic approach to bonsai development

I'm too old to run this process from scratch. I still start material from seedlings and volunteers, but assume they will move on to someone else. I only buy material for myself that already has steps 1, 2 and mostly 3 complete. If I get lucky an air layer can satisfy that requirement.
