    One Infraction Per Season?

    Ahhhhhh sarcasm; didn't see that.

Hmmmm, showing my age. I have forgotten how long ago it was when I bought that book.

    One Infraction Per Season?

I hesitate to use the term "rule" because one can apply different approaches that contradict to the same species. Also diciduous trees have varying capacity to tolerate stresses. I treat regular JM much harder than a shishigashira. Trident maples tolerate much more stress than a regular JM...

looking for JWP info, developing a young plant

The only reliable information I have was from Bonsai Today articles. Stone lantern (Bonsai Bark) has a "Masters series" collection of these articles put into a pine book. Is very good but articles sometimes contradict each other.

    Chinese Elm has brown spots

I think overwatering as well. Needs a repot. Black dots are related to manganese toxicity which becomes more available with waterlogging; not a fungus.

Newbie, confused about bonsai fertilization especially during winter times

Fertilizing is one the most contentious issues on Bnut. Don't be surprised or put off by the myriad of suggestions of how when and type. Personally, you will learn from experience what suites your trees. Initially, I would suggest a little bit often. I don't fertilize my pines or deciduous...

Japanese Maple cuttings [From start to finish: A Guide]

JM can be done, just depends on the cultivar. I successfully rooted Shindeshojo and Kashima, no success with shishigashira, coralinum or okushimo. I found shishigashira would air layer easily enough. Things that helped was to use sterile perlite medium, bottom heat, artificial light for approx...

    Testing substrate pH - how?

It will for a little while, but substrate pH is finite and the potting media pH will start to drift, up or down, depending on fertilizer and water quality.

How smoothly do your growing seasons go?

I expect everything to recover after winter dormancy, even those trees that were repotted. Anything that is not healthy is due to something I'm doing wrong, usually it's from being pot bound, which is rare. I don't always get all the repotting done when needed but usually I can carry them...

    Insects in Air Layer Roots

Could be, looks like how a strawberry gets eaten out. Re layer: Some species of trees will make a lot of callus before throwing out roots. I'd wrap it up and give it some more time. If nothing happens start again in spring. Some trees can be tricky to layer.

    Insects in Air Layer Roots

This is the kind of damage I get on my J maples from Rolly Pollie's. They only seem to cause damage on J and trident maples, sometime they will ring bark a small branch. Hard to get rid of and seem to be in plague numbers, they love bonsai pots because they are always moist. The little devils...

    Show Us Your Bonsai Benches

Just put up a new bench as others were too crowded, thinking I might need another as benches are still cluttered. My benches are utilitarian, they are meant to last forever with zero care. The deck is a ten foot farm gate which comes with a welded steel mesh, heavily galvanized. There is 30...

Die back on Lions Head Maple

To me it looks like you got a bacterial infection in the cut, the node were it has died back too is infected. Just have to wait and see if it travels further but if main branch to the left (picture3) starts to die you will have to cut trunk off below the infection. It's a wait and see.

    Mr. Kimura! Excuse me??

He has probably been asked that question a thousand times, or more. Clearly the inspiration is the Japanese mountains. I saw Kimura at a weekend bonsai event. He was asked to do two or three demonstrations and a workshop. The trees they gave him to work on were aweful, it was embarrassing to be...

Yellowing from inside out on Boulevard Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera)

I always thought C. pisifera looked like this: http://www.ibotky.cz/img/fotogalerie/9-hrdinka/chamaecyparis-pisifera.jpg There you go, looks like there are more than one type.

Pretty sure that's not a chameacypress. Juniper of some sort.

Does using Tap water or Distilled water really matter ?

Tap v distilled (or RO) depends on your tap water. Total alkalinity and total dissolved salts are the hidden baddies in water, neither are easily overcome. If either are high probably best to use RO or collect rainwater.

    Korean Hornbeam help!

I'm in the other hemisphere to you, so consider my advice as near useless. But looks like a blend of sunburn, insect attack (thrips?) and mechanical damage (wind). I have a couple of KH's and they don't like the wind much or too much summer sun, nor do they like salts, though seem hardier that...

    Aha! Learning moments.

Went to a conference with special guest Mr Kimura many years ago. Among a number of things I learnt, the game changer was his advice to be good at bonsai, one needs to do lots of practice, and to get lots of practice you need access to a lot of trees.

Seeking ideas about my new Satsuki Yuki Azalea

From what I can see in a Google search Yuki has hybrid flowers of red and white. Red is a dominant color so have to be careful not to let solid red flowers dominate as you will lose the white and mixed flowers. Pruning to keep mixed and recessive coloured flowers is very important. To difficult...

    Trunk Chopping Nursery trees

Yes, I usually chop to prepared branch. These were field grown trees ready for first chop, about one to two inches thick, in the ground for two or three years, no lower branches. I usually lift the trees and chop with a severe root prune, but was impatient and someone on Bnut said "chop in...

    Best bonsai tool brand?

The best is the one you can afford. I've never thought the price of masakuni was justifiable. I mostly use kaneshin, they have lost a little bit in quality over the years (I first bought kaneshin scissors in 1982, some other tools last year) I have a pair of ryuga but never use them, they just...
