LSU AgCenter called me for a consult on damage to bald cypress trees in the Atchafalaya Basin. LOL Wut?!?

That's my Uncle Boudreaux. He's hiding his cane liquor from my Aunt Marie. Tree poaching is a very good guess. If there's ever any resolution to this, I'll let you know.

LSU AgCenter called me for a consult on damage to bald cypress trees in the Atchafalaya Basin. LOL Wut?!?

This morning, I received a call from someone with the LSU AgCenter regarding damage to bald cypress in the Atchafalaya Basin. I keep laughing when I try to say this out loud. I have a bachelors in Computer Science and an MBA. Someone I know referred me to them. The person who contacted me has a...

My big project: Greenhouse for Frank Yee Cork Bark Portulacaria Afra

We just got back from the Lone Star Bonsai Federation convention in Corpus Christi. My wife was buying every different variety of port. afra she could find. There's a guy on eBay selling cuttings. I'll have to post some updates once the cuttings start developing flaky bark.

My new bonsai carving tool (in .30-06)

Dawn broke in silence. Sitting in the blind, I could see the first rays reaching through the morning mist. Golden light touched the crowns of the tallest trees. Slowly, the light came down, melting across and down the boughs, and I watched. As it fell farther, the light was thinned by the soft...

Bonsai Roast Video (BonsaiNut member trees)

Some of you (four, you cowards) submitted trees for me to roast. This is the result. I'm not sure if this is the start of a series. Depends on the reception I get. Bonsai Roast (no. 1?)

Let me roast your trees on YouTube. I'm in an especially snarky mood.

I'm sending you each a link to a PREVIEW video. The preview will be taken down tomorrow, if not sooner. If you want something pulled from the video, now is the time to let me know. It may be that I've embarrassed myself more than the trees. The official video still needs a thumbnail, intro and...

Let me roast your trees on YouTube. I'm in an especially snarky mood.

Submit any photo where you would say "Look at this tree and tell me what you think." That's when I put on my snarky hat and have a little fun. At no time will I be making you feel as if you should abandon bonsai. For example "It's supposed to be a forest, not a rave. I'm calling this one...

Let me roast your trees on YouTube. I'm in an especially snarky mood.

There are so many good groups that you don't need to stick around in the negative ones. I like a good round of offensive behavior (by others). It helps me figure out who to block. It's even better on Facebook than here at BNut because I usually get their real names. The interesting thing about...

You're on! Permission granted. Reciprocity should be part of this whole thing.

Let me roast your trees on YouTube. I'm in an especially snarky mood.

There is a flaw in my plans: Social Media and YouTube censorship. I'm going to have to censor what I first said about that BC. Then I'm going to go viral for all the wrong reasons on that sweet gum forest and get "cancelled". Do you think Joan of Arc would be a saint if she lit her own pyre...

All of that. I don't care if it's dead/dying or the cotyledons of a seed. You post it, I'll roast it.

Let me roast your trees on YouTube. I'm in an especially snarky mood.

I would like to create a video where I take photos of your bonsai and give them a good verbal roasting. Hopefully this will turn out to be a funny video. Why do this? A certain other bonsai board has been posting some especially crappy misunderstandings of bonsai. My idea was to start an...

    Cutting from a Bald Cypress

Let me know how that comes out. It's not a bald cypress, but I'd still like to know.

    Leaning green island ficus

The charcoal raises the pH, not that much, but the rest is fairly neutral. Kanuma is acidic. Kind of a balance. However, I'm not actually checking the pH. The ficus is going to be happy anyway.

    Leaning green island ficus

Repotted last night. Many roots on the right side of the base were hanging out of a the previous pot. Finally got around to wrangling them. Goal is to keep this healthy and bring it to Corpus Christi, Texas to a BYOT workshop with Mike Lane in September. I have another couple of green islands...

    Bonsai Meme War

Me too. I look at what people are posting in the serious threads and come here and say what I really wanted to say. Or maybe I go poking around on the web to see what's for sale. Inspiration is everywhere . By the way. The original price was $435. I realized that price was for much smaller...

Poured concrete around the base of my elm to encourage radial roots

I went around the base of the tree, just above the concrete, and nicked the trunk in several places. The nicks were dusted with rooting hormone. The nursery tub is too short to cover the concrete with soil. To fix this, I used the side walls of a smaller nursery pot to make a wall around the...

    Bald Cypress Flat-Top Styling Advice

Randy Bennett was one of the first people I met in bonsai. His advice is gold. He has been doing a great deal of travelling lately. If you get a chance to see him, please do! The drawing is by Vaughn Banting (his initials bottom left of trunk). I once had the chance to be sitting with him in...

    Bonsai Meme War

Brilliant! A word of caution, I once (ONCE!) styled a tree after a crawfish boil. I drank too much Abita Amber and grabbed my concave cutters. The next day I looked at the tree and screamed "WHERE DID MY BRANCH GO?!?" Sober Bill HATES Drunk Bill. I don't have a drinking problem, I have a...

Bon-sai-dar: Tree in a pot, detection and ranging. It's an affliction.

Is that the stretch of median that's always flooded? Tempting. 2017, a car crosses the I-10 median and crashes head-on, around mile marker 5. We were stopped near Kiln for 3 hours. We left after midnight. Enormous tragedy, sure, but it gets me thinking. If I had a shovel, I could have been...

Bon-sai-dar: Tree in a pot, detection and ranging. It's an affliction.

This is part of the median at a nearby intersection. I'm waiting for the light to change and suddenly yell "Crepe Myrtles!" At some point during recent roadwork a crepe myrtle was crushed or removed. Beneath these weeds there just might be something worth collecting. The police department of...
