Sorry guys, but this is blackspot fungus. I'd defoliate it and keep it away from other Chinese elms because it spreads. You can buy a spray for treating blackspot on roses - which works on Chinese elms. I had this a few years ago which spread to 15 Chinese elms, some even died as a result...

Just apply the moss at the point you plan to show them if it won't stay alive for you. We have the complete opposite problem here, excessive moss growth.

Exactly. I've got several trees, 1-2 decades in training which are this tiny size. Humidity trays are the way to go...

Cheers I rotate them to try ensure lower and inner foliage survives - especially on Larches. Doesn't always work but we try. If I had sufficient space I'd have everything in the ground - but it's a pain in the ass in a small garden like mine. I've never had particularly bad issues with airflow...

Yes. I made raised beds filled with growing substrate and place them in that, pushing them down into the substrate. They grow through but I don't let them go for more than a couple of months prior to lifting them. The beds are front left and front right in this photo and 90% of the trees in...

I use them constantly - essentially whenever something isn't finished it's in a pond basket after the first year or so. I've never seen anything written against using them.

Foliage makes things fatter. Removing foliage does not help that at all. If you have a garden bed you can plant it in it will grow 10x faster than any pot.
