    Alternatives to akadama

Yes the seramis does seem quite pricey if bought individually. Its a component in the bag of orchid mix ive bought, you get the bark and seramis in one bag, then ive added that to my soil mixes occasionally.

    Alternatives to akadama

I have been using hydro leca, seramis granules, pumice, cat litter/molar clay just random amounts with mostly the molar clay. I add a little bit of orchid mix sometimes. All cheap n cheerful and trees seem happy. Mostly have moisture loving trees Elms, Beech, Hornbeam. Btw I read somewhere that...

What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

I collected 3 Field Elms that were root connected from a garden clearance. Bad timing really, kept putting it off. The local council has been running over the sucker for a while. Ive watered them in, bagged them up and put in deep shade. Will mist once a week.

    Young Oak

Ive had a couple in the past. But never known them to bud outside of nodes, you mean like an Elm? Im not convinced, ive got a couple so will see:) So if I cut back a branch to zero nodes, it will backbud? Thanks for your input, will see how it goes!

    Young Oak

The shape is there, in terms of the natural primary branch habit (up n out) . I'd like some trunk thickening though. Those branches would naturally need clipping back at some point closer to trunk. Im sort of in two minds, to clip back some branches short now, because there's lots of short...

Quercus Rober Versus an Oak I always walk past in the park.. Oaks are so slow, with large leaves, long internodes. Wll see what can be done with this.

Raynn’s Seedlings - English Oak and Horse Chestnut

The twin trunk or multi if you include the thin branch, decent flare which is a start. If you can forget about making it into a bonsai and concentrate more on the three trunks becoming sub trunks, in true Oak form. Then you might decrease the time it takes to have something which is pleasing on...

Choosing the right nursery stock, what to look for

I look for trunk movement, which is often difficult to find in nursery stock. So the next best thing is well placed low branches, good root flare, health. Trees with good tops have air layering potential, see Mirai video above. Trees with branching on one side could be potential raft material...

Raynn’s Seedlings - English Oak and Horse Chestnut

Oaks are painfully slow to thicken up, I would suggest planting in the ground if you have space. I picked up a couple from a nursery recently, £3.50 each. They have plenty of bits n pieces that have either self seeded in pots or been planted by squirrels. They pot them up individually. I only...

    Punica Granatum/Pomegranate

Some progress. I feel like it needs to gain a bit more vigour though. The cuttings taken from it are further along this spring. Haven't gone overboard on the wiring or hollows. Just a bit here n there. I like where its headed. Feel like I may have been watering it too much. Cut back on watering...

    European beech pest ID

This stuff is very good https://www.gardenworld.co.uk/product/organic-rose-guard/ Organic Rose Guard works by physical action providing protection against aphids, powdery mildew and other leaf diseases. After drying, it creates a residual barrier to limit spore germination. Spraying removes...

    European beech pest ID

Yup wooley aphids. Im just using water n washing up liquid in a spray bottle atm, every few days spraying the leaves and surfaces. Seems to be keeping the plants bug free. But I did use an organic insecticide at bud swell, also during winter. The one I have has a oily, milky texture, the bugs...

Building taper - when to chop and create a new leader

Interesting discussion! 'I have never had great results wiring up a new leader like your diagrams show. Usually the wiring constricts growth, and another shoot overpowers the wired one, so when I do chop a trunk, I try to prune it at a point (node) that already has shoots growing as the diagram...

The buds are just beginning to move on this Beech clump. Put together from hedging material recently. I did another one with Hornbeams that isnt looking good. On this Beech I kept many of the roots, all the long downward ones, to give it the best chance. Because the roots can be reduced over a...
